Violence and harassment have devastating implications for the targeted journalist as her well-being, her work, her private life and eventually press freedom are affected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Roboto Light',serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; text-align: justify; box-sizing: border-box;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Roboto Light',serif; color: black;\">To\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">mark 25 November<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Roboto Light',serif; color: black;\">,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">The International day for the elimination of violence against women and girls<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Roboto Light',serif; color: black;\">, the IFJ is calling on all its unions to campaign for the full ratification by their government of ILO Convention 190.\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">Read the testimonies of IFJ Gender Council members in\u00a0<a style=\"box-sizing: border-box; cursor: pointer; transition: all 0.5s ease-in-out 0s;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ifj.org\/media-centre\/news\/detail\/category\/international-day-for-the-elimination-of-violence-against-women-and-girls\/article\/ratifyc190-to-combat-online-abuse.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #e91e13;\">Canada<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<a style=\"box-sizing: border-box; cursor: pointer; transition: all 0.5s ease-in-out 0s;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ifj.org\/media-centre\/news\/detail\/category\/press-releases\/article\/ratifyc190-to-support-women-journalists-claims-against-cyberattacks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #e91e13;\">Cyprus<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<a style=\"box-sizing: border-box; cursor: pointer; transition: all 0.5s ease-in-out 0s;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ifj.org\/media-centre\/news\/detail\/article\/ratifyc190-reconozcamos-la-violencia-y-el-acoso-laboral-en-todas-sus-dimensiones.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #e91e13;\">Peru<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a style=\"box-sizing: border-box; cursor: pointer; transition: all 0.5s ease-in-out 0s;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ifj.org\/media-centre\/news\/detail\/category\/8-march-ilo-convention-190\/article\/ratifyc190-to-respond-to-the-threats-of-being-a-woman-and-a-journalist.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #e91e13;\">Portugal<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on why ratification of the Convention is key for women journalists.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Roboto Light',serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; text-align: justify; box-sizing: border-box;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Roboto Light',serif; color: black;\">The International Labour Organization (ILO) passed on 10 June 2019\u00a0a\u00a0<a style=\"box-sizing: border-box; cursor: pointer; transition: all 0.5s ease-in-out 0s;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/dyn\/normlex\/en\/f?p=NORMLEXPUB:12100:0::NO::P12100_ILO_CODE:C190\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #e91e13;\">new Convention &#8211; ILO C190<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to end violence and harassment in the world of work, as well as a recommendation, 206.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Roboto Light',serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; text-align: justify; box-sizing: border-box;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Roboto Light',serif; color: black;\">We need this convention and its recommendation to be ratified by governments across the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Roboto Light',serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; text-align: justify; box-sizing: border-box;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Roboto Light',serif; color: black;\">Why? Because it\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">can change journalists\u2019 and citizens\u2019 lives<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Roboto Light',serif; color: black;\">\u00a0by outlawing harassment and violence in the world of work and turn workplaces into violence-free zones.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Roboto Light',serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; text-align: justify; box-sizing: border-box;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Roboto Light',serif; color: black;\">Journalism can be a dangerous profession. In order to cover breaking stories, journalists put themselves in contexts of war, conflict and natural disasters. In order to report on corruption, human rights abuses and political chicanery, journalists often incur the wrath of the most powerful in society.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Roboto Light',serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; text-align: justify; box-sizing: border-box;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Roboto Light',serif; color: black;\">Women journalists who find themselves in such situations are often the\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">specific focus of violence<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Roboto Light',serif; color: black;\">.\u00a0<a style=\"box-sizing: border-box; cursor: pointer; transition: all 0.5s ease-in-out 0s;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ifj.org\/fileadmin\/user_upload\/factsheet.pdf\"><span style=\"color: #e91e13;\">According to IFJ statistics<\/span><\/a><\/span>, almost 65% of women media workers have experienced intimidation, threats or abuse in relation to their work. This is a threat to freedom of expression and media freedom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Roboto Light',serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; text-align: justify; box-sizing: border-box;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Roboto Light',serif; color: black;\">Abuse can come from all directions: a senior-editor who uses his position to intimidate a young female journalist; a female reporter reporting outside being groped or receiving sexist comments or being physically assaulted by her interviewee or bystanders.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Roboto Light',serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; text-align: justify; box-sizing: border-box;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\"><strong style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">ILO C190 can bring about change<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Roboto Light',serif; color: black;\">.
